The world financial crisis had affected Bali tourism businesses. The evidence can be seen by looking into cancellation of hotel reservations which so far has recorded as many as 10,000 room/nights. Herdy Sayogha, the head of Marketing Division in Bali Tourism Board (BTB), said “We have already received the cancellation report by Bali Hotels and Restaurants Association (PHRI).’
After a coordination meting to prepare for the tourism confer¬ence entitled Indonesian Tourism Challenges – The Global Crisis which will be held on December 23rd 2008, he hoped that the prediction of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) was correct. The APEC predicted that the financial crisis will last for approximately 24 months.
A meting between BTB and related stakeholders a couple of days ago produced a stunning fact that every day hotels in Bali are receiving cancellation request and currently the number of cancellation has reached 10,000 room/nights.
Apparently the cancellation was the effect of the financial crisis occurred all over the world. One of the travel agents targeting Russian market admitted that the decrease of tourists booking through his travel agent was around 50%.
Tourism businessmen in Singapore and Malaysia had decreased the price for their tourism products. The decrease of tourism market in the world will resulted in unhealthy competition. “There will be hard competition among tourism destinations all around the world to attract tourists to visit their country,” added Herdy.
Similar situation will also happen in Bali and there is great possibility that price war will soon occur. In order to manage the price war, BTB will always examine the competition in the field of tourism.
