International panel of experts gathered across for regions in Asia over the last few weeks has judged more than 580 entries for toe 2008 UNESCO Award Excellence for Handicraft. The award will be presented on December 14th in Bangkok.
UNESCO Award Excellence for Handicraft is presented to a handful of artists and craft companies from South-East Asia region. The natural light company had the distinction of being one of the three companies from Indonesia to win the award and the only candle company to receive the award in Asia.
The range of handicraft submission was highly diverse, including traditionally woven textiles and fibers, metal works, carvingas, ceramics, and candles. In South-East Asia, submission were taken from 11 countries with products from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Phillipines, and Thailand being considered for the year’s award.
An international panel of experts in design, marketing, and handicraft production, systematically judged the submission through four key criteria including excellence, authenticity, innovation, and marketability as well as other criteria such as design, eco-friendliness, and the social responsibility of the producer.
By recognizing such characteristic of craftmanship, the UNESCO program aims to encourage the craft sector to preserve the cultural diversity and traditional skills to promote high standards of quality and authenticity, raise international awareness for Asian handicraft products while encouraging artisans to consider the relevance and function of their creations.
The winning entries will be on permanent display at he SACICT Center in Bangsai and several upcoming regional exshibitions and trade fairs. The particular product that The National Light Company is awarded for is the natural candle made from banana leaf designed by Kelly Marciano. The brand holder PR Sinar Alami Kreasi is located in Sanur, Bali, and has been producing quality candles for fine retailers, hotels, and spas worldwide for over 10 years.
