Bali as one of the most famous tourist destinations in the world has to preserve marine biodiversity apart from its culture and traditions, an official said. Bali does not have natural resources like gold, silver, or coal mining. It only has tourism industry which is expected to improve welfare of its people, said I Gde Nurjaya, Head of Bali Tourism office.

Art, tradition, and other cultural potentials have to be properly maintained to support tourism industry. In developing tourism sector the government must prevent itself for over-exploiting the island’s natural resources. Tourism should be developed based on sustainable development principles to guarantee sustainable welfare of both current and future generations.

During January to August 2008 period Bali which is known for both beautiful beaches as well as cultural heritage has received 1.2 million foreign tourists, a 20 percent increase from around one million of visiting foreign tourist in the same period of last year.

The Indonesian culture and tourism ministry has set an optimistic target for foreign tourist visit of 6.7 million for the whole year of 2009, which is 6.2. percent higher than the projected achievement of between 6.4 to 6.5 million in 2008.
