Denpasar – The “Melasti” ritual which is the ritual to purify the holy items (pretima) from Besakih Temple to Kelotok Beach will be carried out this weekend for three days. The melasti will be done in association with the Karya Agung Panca Bali Krama (PBK) at Besakih Temple.
The Melasti will begin on March 21st through March 23rd 2009 and will cover approximately 65 kilometers. Wayan Gunatra, the head of PBK committee, said that the melasti will pass through 29 villages in Karangasem and Klungkung regencies.
Most of the roads will be closed during the ceremony. Thousands of Hindus will take part in melasti while carrying 36 pretima using the special place called jempana. Last year, the convoy reached to be longer because more people are planning to participate. In addition to the Hindus all around Indonesia, hindus aboard will also take part in the rituals.
Gunatra informs the people who plan to travel through those regencies to find alternative routes because most of the roads will be closed during the ceremony. On the first day, march 21st 2009, the road from Besakih through Kelotok beach will be closed for all vehicles.
The next day, the main road from Klungkung through Puseh Tebola Temple will be closed. On the last day, the road form Puseh Tebola Temple to Besakih Temple will be closed.
After the melasti convoy passes through these roads, they will be reopened as usual. The melasti ceremony requires tons of flowers, fruits, and meats which are all used to make offerings for the Gods.
