Denpasar – Professor Dr. Dewa Gede Atmadja, SH, a political observer from Udayana University believes that the number of election abstainers or “golput” will increase if the up coming presidential race is to be held in two rounds.
“The ‘golput’ percentage is expected to increase if the presidential and vice presidential race is held in two rounds,” he said Sunday.
If the golput percentage is up it will indicate a decline in the people’s confidence towards the government, he said.
The high number of golput is an indication that the people have ground bored due to a series of polls across the country in addition to regional and gubernatorial elections, he said.
Dewa Gede Atmadja expressed hope that this coming July presidential race would be participated in by two presidential pairs only in a bid to make it run in one round.
He also hopes that the General Election Commission (KPU) and its regional chapters will be able to prevent the recurrence of the April 9th, 2009 legislative polls shortcomings in next July 8th presidential race.
A total of 38 national political parties and six local parties in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) province, took part in the last months legislative polls.
