Denpasar – Bali sent 3,975 professional workers on cruise ships abroad in 2008. The number increased from the previous year which was only 3,000. Anak Agung Gede Anom Wartawan, the head of Bali Worker, Transmigration, and Civil Department, said “There is great hope that this year we can send more workers abroad.”
During January through March 2009, Bali sent 1,029 workers abroad. They consist of 886 males and 143 females who come from all regencies in Bali. Most of them have worked on cruise ships before, and the rest of the workers have job experience in either hotels or restaurants throughout the world.
At least 30 countries in the world employ workers from Bali and most of them are in the United State and Italy. “The workers were contracted for eight months and were added with the approval from both sides,” added Wartawan.
Bali has sent workers abroad since 2001 and at that time only 1,251 workers were sent abroad. Then the number of workers seeking vacancy abroad began increasing every year. In 2002 there were 2,204 workers; in 2003 there were 2,130 workers. The umber grew to 3,096 workers in 2004 but decreased slightly in 2005 where there were 2,900 workers. In 2007, Bali sent 3,000 workers abroad.
Wartawan said that the young generation in bali is looking for vacancy abroad especially after the Indonesian Government started providing many benefits for the workers such as giving recommendation letters, free fiscal fees,a nd others.
Working abroad gives provides better opportunities for the workers who can not get jobs in Indonesia. Bali’s Government has cooperated with schools all around Indonesia in order to give the proper training for the workers before they are sent abroard.
