Denpasar – The “One Earth School” established by spiritual figure Anand Krishna in Denpasar, Bali, is expected to be a model school to instill a sence of tolerance in its students.
“The school was founded by various religious figures, and the histories of various religions will be taught to its students,” Anand Krishna said at a function to dedicate the “One Earth School” here on Saturday in conjunction with the observance of National Education may.
He explained that in the past, religions were generally taught separately. Therefore, students have been brainwashed since childhood into thinking mainly about the differences among the various religions.
“In this new school, we are going to teach the history of the relationships that exist between different religious but without influencing the students’ religious faiths because this is the responsibility of parents and religious leaders,” Krishna said.
Teachers from various religious backgrounds will teach at the school so that the different religions will not be presented in opposition to one another, he said.
Krishna said the students of One Earth School will be taught to become integrated members of the global community on the basis of Indonesia’s local morals and wisdom with the expectation that they will be able to face global challenges.
He added that to be a model school, One Earth School will invite teachers from other schools to make comparative studies.
“The teachers from other schools can learn from us how we educate our students. Here we integrate moral related education into all subjects of study,” he said.
He said in mathematics, the teacher will not ask the students how many goats they had after two out of ten were stolen.
“Instead, the teacher will ask how many goats a student has after two out of ten were contributed to a poor neighbor. Thus, besides asking a question, we also want to instill the spirit of generosity in the students,” Krishna said.
