Lifeguard officers (Balawista) increased the safety level in Kuta beach because the number of visitors increasing greatly during the holiday seasoon. I Made Suparka, the coordinator of Badung’s Balawista, said “the officers warned and forbid anyone to swim in the dangerous area marked by red flags. We tighten the safety level because there are so many visitors in the beach.”
The visitors of Kuta beach only can swim in the area between the yellow flags. “The visitors crowded in the afternoon and it was dominated by the domestic tourists. The foreigners usually come on July, especially those from Australia,” added Suparka.
Currently, the condition of Kuta beach is quite calm and the waves only up to 1.5 meters high. Few days ago, the waves were 2 or 3 meters high and it usually brought in strong current. Suparka said “the condition of the sea is unpredictable, that’s why we always stay alert. The visitors also must pay attention more on the rules.”
Sometimes, the officers are having trouble in monitoring the visitors because often they swim in the dangerous area. “Maybe they chose to swim in the more crowded area because often the dangerous area is the one they are looking for. However, we always on guard to anticipate any problems,” he said.
The main cause of accident is the current. The current is very hard to predict that’s why the officers always marked the string current area with red flags. The number of lifeguard officers in Bandung regency is not adequate to cover the entire coastline. Currently, Badung has 128 officers but the ideal number should be doubled.
To overcome the problem, the Balawista is focusing in the certain area considered dangerous. There are six posts, each consist of eight officers.
