A local play called “sendratari” which presented various characters through choreography attracted attention from the locals and foreign tourists. Wayan Dibia, a lecturer in Indonesian Art Institute (ISI) Denpasar, said “the art was originally made to entertain guests for Indonesia and now become famous play troughout Indonesia including western Java and Nusa Tenggara.”
The term “sendratari” was firstly used by the late Anjar Asmara, an artist in literary and film, to translate the term in ballet. In the development of the sendratari, the arts attracted many audiences because the well arrangements made it a beautiful art.
Dibaia said that in Bali, the art of sendratari was born in Konservatori Kerawitan Indonesia (Kokar), an education department specialized in studying Balinese music and dances, in 1962.
I Wayan Beratha, a choreographer and composer, created the first sendratari called “sendratari Jayaprana”. The art developed in Bali especially because the Bali Art Festival which is held every year. The art need to be preserved in the future.
Changes can be done as long as it doesn’t erase the essential meaning of the art as a play which emphasis on dancing. Dibia said that even tough sendratari had endured many changes but it still can attract audiences. The condition can be seen in the colossal sendratari on June 13th 2009 in the 31st annual Bali Art Festival which involved more than 200 artists.
