Denpasar – 40 Balinese youngsters played the “selonding” instruments, a traditional music, at the Angsoka Stage, Art Center Denpasar. The children were students from the Elementary school and junior high school, and they were accompanied by 20 dancers performing sacred dances.
The performance by the children attracted many audience members during the 31st annual Bali Art Festival (PKB). The children were trained by Made Mangku Susena from “Pasraman Saraswati Maha Pradnya” in Karangasem regency.
There is great hope that by learning the traditional music, the children could preserve Balinese traditional arts and continue passing the knowledge on from one generation to the next.
I Wayan Dibia, a lecturer at the Indonesian Art Institute (ISI) Denpasar, said that “selonding” instrument is made from bronze and can produce seven tones. It is a very rare “barungan alit” and very sacred in their origin, which is in Tenganan Pegringsingan village and Bongaya in Karangasem.
The instrument usually played during Balinese ceremonies and dances such as abuang dance. In Tenganan Pageringsingan village, “selonding” is generally called “Bhatara Bagus Selonding”.
