Chinese String & Bamboo Music Ensemble Elite from Taiwan National University of Arts, Taiwan will perform their traditional music in the 31th annual Bali Art Festival (BAF) on Friday, June 3rd 2009.
Ted Tsung-te, the coordinator of the Taiwan art group, said that the one will perform the music are students who learn Chinese and Taiwan traditional music. The mucis itself had been rearranged by the graduate of the Master program majoring in ethnomusicology in the university.
The traditional Taiwan music only played in ceremonies in temples and once in a while in wedding ceremony or others. It is very rare that the music played to entertain the audiences,” he added.
However, nowadays many Taiwanese artists study aboard so their understanding in music also changes. They are affected by the western art and customs, that’s why many of them rearrange the traditional music which is nearly being forgotten by others. There is a need to perform the music outside the temple in order to preserve it.
Ted Tzung-te laso said that he is very amazed by Bali because the Balinese can play their traditional music in a ceremony or for entertaiment. He said that is the performances, the artists will perform new music but still spirited by the traditional music and they will use traditional musical instruments.
“In addition to carry out performances in the BAF, we also wanted to learn how the Balinese cope with this condition. We anted to know whether the Balinese welcome the traditional music perform as the mean of entertainment,” said Ted Tzung-te.
He explained that the Taiwan art mostly came from China because the Taiwan citizen were mostly immigrants from China. However, the art in taiwan develop and it made the art slightly different with those in China.
In addition to perform traditional music, the art group also will perform Opera Kunqu, Beiguan, and music by famous composers. There will be also collaboration with other arts such as photo, calligraphy, animation and installation art.
