The Ajeg Bali or Sustainable Bali concept has been proved functional to Balinese people. It is indicated by its presence that was capable of triggering and motivating the community to discuss what is meant by good Balinese culture and what is good to Balinese culture.
Such aphorism was delivered by two Australian scholars, namely Associate Professor Jeff Lewis (lecturer at RMIT University) and Dr. Belinda Lewis (monash Univerity) Melbourne, Australia in their general lecture session at Cultural Studies Program of Udayana University, Friday (10/7).
The lecture inagurated by the Dean of Faculty of Letters, Udayana University Prof. Ardika and interpreted by Dr. I Nyoman Darma Putra was attended by 50 students as well as accompanied by the Head of the Study Program Prof. Made Suastika.
In the general lecture, Jeff and Belinda Lewis also introduced their newly published book on Bali entitled “Bali’s Silent Crisis: Desire, Tragedy and Transition.”
Having organized the discussion at Faculty of Letters, Udayana University, jeff and Belinda resumed making a visit to Ketut Nadha Bali Press Building. Jeff handed over his book to the CEO of Bali Post Media Group Satria Naradha who has been made as a resource person in writing the book regarding to the Sustainable Bali. “We get amazed at the Ustainable Bali concept. On that account, it should be rolled out continuously through several real actions in the community empowerment,” Jeff Lewis said.
The book published in the United States retains in-depth analysis by means of cultural studies approach to a variety of cultural problems faced by Bali in the alteration process due to the impacts of globalization within the past 30 years.
According to Jeff and Belinda, within the past three decades, Bali underwent many changes caused by numerous matters, including the globalization and terrorism attack. The Sustainable Bali emerged in the increasingly intense changes and has been used by Balinese community to discuss the methods to strengthen the Balinese culture. “Similarly, the Sustainable Bali concept is beneficial to filter the influences of external culture,” he said. However, he added, the most important one was the situation where the community dared to express their opinion to response to the government’s development programs. Great solution can be obtained from several public opinions for the sake of common goodness.
These scholars also added that Balinese community has psycho cultural resources in facing a wide variety of crisis and transitional era. “these resource are also beneficial to renew and recover the enthusiasm of the community,” he said while conveying illustration how Bali created serenity after the terrorism attack.
Ultimately, Jeff and Belinda also explained that they wrote the book to expound to wider readers about what happened in Bali and how Balinese people faced the trasitions.
