Handicrafts made from bamboo such as lamp, have been exported to Saudi Arabia, Japan, Netherlands, and Australia. Anak Agung Putri, a craftswoman and exporter, said “the order is not much but we are quite busy in handling the order.”
Show added that the bomb explosions in Jakarta several weeks ago started to affect the handicrafts business in Bali. The orders keep decreasing after the bomb blast. “Hopefully it is only temporary and the business can be as usual as soon as possible,” said Mrs. Putri.
I Ketut Dana, a craftsman, also started similar thing. He hopes that the effect of the Jakarta bomb blast woll not last for long time. “If the bomb terrors keep happening in Indonesia, the handicrafts business will become slower because the handicrafts order mostly coming form foreign tourists,” he added.
The decrease of exports in handicrafts was not only because the bomb explosion but also because the financial crisis which happened throughout the world. Bali Trade Department stated that the number of handicraft exports was decreasing during January through May 2009 period.
In the first months of 2009 the number of handicrafts exports to Netherlands decreased from $5.7 million last year and became $4.1 million. The number of exports to Japan also decreased 20% comppared to the same period last year. During January through May 2008, the number of exports was $37.8 million but in the same period this year the number of exports was only $30.2 million.
