Fishermen in Tejakula village, Buleleng regency, will form beach security officers who will guard the coral reefs. I Ketut Suwardana, the head of Tejakula Village, said “the security officers will patrol around the beach to prevent someone destroy or steal the coral reefs.”
The officers also must forbid the fishermen use explosive or potassium to catch fish because it can destroy the coral reefd and other living organism. Tejakula village had been officially appointed as the Sea Management Village.
“We also had established rules to preserve the coral reefs. If someone violates the rules then we will arrest him and turn him into the police,” added Suwardana. The village which has 4 kilometers of coast line still has beautiful coral reefs.
After became the sea management village, there is great hope that the villagers will preserve the coral reefs in order to increases the welfare of the fishermen. Made Arga Pynatih, the vice head of Buleleng regency, said that the government will urged the locals in Buleleng to preserve the coral reefs.
“Buleleng has 157 kilometers of coast line which has many potential especially for diving. It can be matched with Bunaken in northern Sulawesi. In Menjangan island there is beautiful coral reefs and you can see dolphins on Lovina beach,” he added. Buleleng Government had prepared strategic plans through 2020 to preserve coral reefs.
Naneng Setiasih, the Director Reef Check Indonesia, is the one who facilitate the coral reefs preservation. “Is not us who attract the society but on the contrary, the people of Tejakula themselves who wanted to preserve the coral reefs. We only facilitate their passion including teaching them how to dive,” she added. There is great hope that the coral reefs also protected by the law so it can be more protected.
