The head of Commission I in Bali’s House of representative, I Made Arjaya, said that the works of Balinese artists must be given the copyright so it will not be claimed by other countries.
“We recommend the government to register the works of Balinese artists especially those that are anonymous. The arts can be registered by the name Bali’s Government,” he added. Arjaya said that Balinese people created many anonymous arts and it was made as the form of offering towards God and as the social contribution to the society.
Registering the art works is very important in order to claim by other countries such as Pendet dance which is claimed by Malaysia. Indonesian Government also must help in registering the copyright. Indonesian Law and Human Right Minister must create cheap system for registering the arts works.
Arjaya said “if the necessary, the one who want to register some thing must be freed from any cost. It is the steps needed to be done in order to protect the Indonesian people. If the government wants to protect their citizen, does the citizen need to pay for the protection? What the taxes are used for?”
The government must show that they are willing to save the culture of their country. “The government in province or regency level also must take part in registering the art work, especially after the government allows registering by group name and not only individually. The people need the copyright not for the money but to protect their work,” he added.
