Customers from Malaysia often imported many Balinese handicrafts and they sell it again in their country. Ngurah Anom, a businessman and exporter, said that the kind of trade is common not only in Malaysia but also in other countries throughout the world.
Bali exported handicrafts to 89 countries all around the world such as Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. The businessmen in those countries often sell the handicrafts from Bali as souvenirs for the tourists coming there.
Malaysia was the highest importer of Bali’s handicrafts among the South East Asia countries. Anom admitted that he went to Malaysia and exmine the market in the country.
Wayan Kusumawathi, the head of Foreign Trade Department, said that Malaysia was the biggest importer of Bali non-oil and gas products. Bali’s expert to South East Asia countries during January through July 2009 period was $5.6 million and 50% of it imported by Malaysia.
There is great hope that the number of exports will increase in the next few months because mostly the order increasing by the end of the year. Last year, the number of exports was approximately $1 million every month.
