The Denpasar city administration has prepared Rp2 billion taken from last year’s budget, in anticipation of annual floods.
“Budget was taken from last year’s unpredictable budget leftover of Rp4 billion, which is made available until December 2009,” the city administration spokesman Erwin Suryadarma said.
He said that many precautionary measures had been taken by the Denpasar city administration, like removal of garbage from sewages and riverbanks in Denpasar.
Apart from removing garbage from the rivers, they also warn the people not to throw away garbage into the rivers.
A river cleaning officer is authorized to arrest a person for littering the river.
He also said that the amount of garbage piling up in Denpasar rivers is caused by the people’s lack of awareness that the river is the backyard of homes, but in practice it became the front yard of homes, causing river littering.
“To change the people’s way of thinking, the Denpasar city administration would need a long time,” he said.
There are several rivers in Denpasar as sources of floods in the rainy season, such as Tukad Badung and Tukad Mati which have a long river stream through Denpasar city, like the Tukad Badung stretching from Darmasaba to Suwung Area, he said.
“To anticipate floods from the two rivers, the Denpasar city administration has built nets each a few meters apart to pick up garbage form the river stream,” he said.
Denpasar’s potential flood areas are Pura Demak Street, Monang Maning and Sidakarya, because they were located on a slope which caused the development of bubbles.
“Not to mention the heavy rainfall at every full-moon which makes things worse, where the sea is also rising. Some water pumps had also been prepared by the city administration in anticipation of such development,” he said.
The city administration’s high capacity water pumps can be mobilized at any time, he said.
Basically when alerted, every member of the Denpasar city administration task force also had to stand by 24 hours to help people in case of a flood.
Besides, a call center had also been prepared, and the people are welcome to call 223333 for officers standing by to assist them.
