Forty two “jukung” or traditional boats take part in Jukung parade in Nusa Dua beach on Tuesday, October 20th 2009. The “jukung” filled with various kinds of ornaments and it attracts tourists to watch the parade.
The jukung parade was started on Segara beach through Samuh beach in front of Melia Bali Hotel and it last approximately 2 hours. Several foreign tourists were also on board the “jukung” to join the parade.
I Made Mandra, the director of Bali Tourism Development Company (BTDC), said that the parade was done in order to promote culture and art of Bali and also Nusa Dua as international area.
“We created the jukung parade to urge the fishermen to keep the ocean clean and didn’t pollute by wastes,” he added. Currently, 70% of the coral reefs in Bali had been polluted. Mandra said “we will keep trying to prevent waste disposal to the ocean and giving the understanding to the people to keep the ocean clean.”
Mandra added that there is great hope that the fishermen association in the area will take part in the program created by BTDC in keeping the environment clean. I Nyoman Budiana, the head of Nusa Dua Fishermen Association said that the association fully supports the program.
“We depends our life in the sea, furthermore Nusa Dua is a tourism area and we must conserve the area,” he added. The fishermen association always takes part in many festivals such as DNF. In addition to catch fish, the fishermen also give a tour to the tourists.
The tour can give extra income to them. “The fishermen could receive up to 100,000 rupiah for one trip,” Budiana said. There were three fishermen association took part in the parade, they were Segara Bengiat Nusa Dua, Merta Segara Samuh, and Karya Segara Serangan fishermen association.
