Most of the foreign tourists coming to Bali use air transportation. Approximately 99% of the foreigners use airplanes and only 1% uses sea transportation. Ida Komang Wisnu, the head of Bali Statistics Department said that the total number of tourists visited Bali from January through August 2009 was 1,538,048 tourists and only 3,708 used ships.
In August 2009, 232,255 tourist visited Bali and 232,090 of the tourists coming through Ngurah rai Airport. The rest was coming through Benoa Harbor. There is great hope that by the opening of the harbor in Karangasem, more tourists will come to Bali through the sea. Wisnu said that the number of foreigners fly directly to Bali increase in August 2009 compared to the same period last year. The increased was up to 18%. Bali is still one of the main tourism destinations in the world. Many people throughout the world are coming to the island. Wisnu said that at least there are seven countries that supplied tourists are Australia, China, malaysia, England, France, Germany, and USA.
