Karangasem is potential to be developed as spiritual tourism. In order to make Karangasem as spiritual tourism, the asset, custom, culture and beauty of nature should be well maintained. It should be allowed to build villa and hotel at every hillside, beach and foot of mountain.
Tourism observer, Dr. I Nyoman Madiun, revealed it last Sunday (Dec 13) at Candidasa, Karangasem. He disagreed to build a hotel or villa at locations where tourists often stop to take a photograph or admire the beauty of nature. Ideally, the asset in the form of beauty of nature should be conserved and might not undergo transfer of function into building.
“Beauty of nature denotes an asset of tourism including spiritual tourism. On that account, its preservation should be maintained, Not on contrary, it is filled with villas or hotels,” he asserted. Today, he added, there was a trend where a beautiful location was always targeted by investors and used to build a villa or hotel. On the other side, government was often too late to protect such as location were filled in by buildings, even they made the location look disorganized. Strangely, some regulations have been made but often neglected.
According to Madiun, who is also the Department Head of Tourism Management at STP Nusa Dua Bali, Karangasem was potential to be developed into spiritual tourism. Other than custom and tradition, it had many unique cultures that remained pristine. Almost everyday visitors could see such activities and they could become an attraction to visitors. At that time, tour guide and practitioner of tourism should be able to explain well to foreign tourists. Meanwhile, the beauty of nature belonging to Karangasem was extraordinary. “Now, it stays how to manage and maintain the asset in order it remains everlasting and interesting,” he said.
According to him, the object of spiritual tourism did not only mean a religious or spiritual activity or taking people to temple and make temple as tourist object. However, the object of spiritual tourism lay between art-culture and local customary tradition with beauty of nature. By seeing and enjoying beautiful nature, tour guide should be able to take tourist to contemplate and to build awareness on the greatness of God as the Creator and Lord of the beautiful nature. “At that time, the tourists are expected to downgrade their egoism into awareness of the Creator. At the same time, awareness will emerge changing the bad behavior to good one and realize that beyond the human lies the Supreme God,” he described.
On the other side, a member of Karangasem House, I Wayan Tama, stated to agree with Madiun According to him, the most important thing in seeing the social activities and enjoying the beauty of nature, tour guide should be able to deliver the information properly to tourist. Spiritual tourism could become an alternative in the framework to maintain the spirit of Bali tourism that was worried to lose and would threaten the existence of tourism in Bali.
